Successive calls to...

I'm successfully saving to a local JSON file using FileReference.save(), but subsequent calls to FileReference.save() append the new JSON string to any?previous JSON strings already in the file.

Is there a way to force the file to be fully overwritten by the new data string?

Make PDF Comments searchable with Mac...

Hello All,

I'm about to re-enter school for my master's degree and I'm expecting to do a lot of work with PDF files (reading, writing, editing, etc.).?The comments feature is particularly useful, since I will need to be taking notes when reading such documents.?After some mild testing--open a PDF, place arbitrary comment within file, then save a close PDF--has shown that the comments within such PDFs are not searchable by the Mac Spotlight feature.?Is there a way to enable this ability, or am I stuck making an entirely separate text file with notes for every PDF I read?

Thanks for the information,

WD

Make PDF Comments searchable with Mac...

A quick Google search turns up nothing. I've never heard of a way to search PDF comments with Spotlight. Spotlight looks for metadata which is stored EXTERNAL to the PDF file itself, or other file formats it supports. It doesn't actually READ inside the PDF (which could be painfully slow).

You could try selecting each PDF, and choosing File %26gt; Get Info. In the Spotlight Comments field at the top enter keywords for things you want to be able to search for in Spotlight.

Make PDF Comments searchable with Mac...

Hello Steve,

While in one case, I suppose you are correct in postulating that Spotlight catalogs metadata external to file, that's not entirely true.?For instance, I keep a text file called ''Info'' where I place random bits of information I'd like to come back to for more research (i.e. books to read, movies to see).?If I do a Spotlight search for ''Visual Explanations'' (sans quotes), this Information file is returned because it contains the text ''Visual Explanations, Quantities, Evidence, Narrative - Edward Tufte'', a book I'd like to purchase in the future.?So Spotlight is capable of reading some internal file information, and I had hoped to enable it to read my notes contained within PDF files.

I've considered tagging PDFs using Tagit (for Mac), which adds tags to the Info field in the Get Info dialog box, but while that adds to my ability to categorize a file according to general tags, it does not allow me to look within large quantities of random notes in my PDF comments.?Creating tags that encompass a commented PDF would take far too long and would add an unwieldy amount of tags to the system.?

I hope this clarifies my thoughts on the matter--thanks for your reply.

Spotlight does actually read inside files of certain types (including doc and PDF). (File content is added to the metadata that is used to generate the Spotlight index for supported file types.)

I'm not sure if there's any nice way to get it to read comments, though, as Apple doesn't support all of the features that can be included in PDFs. Since they've added commenting, though, it's strange they don't search comments well.

What about content in a text box? That might be a workaround if that content gets indexed.

Using my test PDF file, I've typed unique text in Callout boxes, Comment boxes, and Text boxes, and so far none of them is searchable in Spotlight.?I'm not sure what the capture rate of Spotlight is--that is, how soon things are added to the Spotlight catalog--but after two days of using the computer and leaving it on overnight, Spotlight has yet to allow me to find these items in a search.?So far, I'm guessing that I'll have to export the comments to a text file after doing my markup, or just take notes somewhere else.

One workaround (not ideal, since you'll end up creating a duplicate file of your document) would be to create another PDF of your document by selecting ''Print with Comment Summary'' from the Comments menu. Printing to the Adobe PDF engine while selecting the fourth option (and probably the first option) would give you searchable comments. Unfortunately, you'd end up having duplicates of each document: one searchable document and one ''working'' document.

I've just tried it with the fourth layout option, and Spotlight found my test text immediately.

Disclaimer: I'm the author of Pear Note

You could use an external note-taking tool that supports PDF files such as Pear Note. I'm a little biased (as I write Pear Note), but I use it for taking notes on PDF documents all the time. The notes and PDF are both searchable by Spotlight. It's definitely a different way of working, but it accomplishes the goal of linking notes with PDF document and having both be searchable.

What happened to the Premiere Pro CS3...

It appears that there is no longer a separate CS3 forum.

If this is true, have all of the CS3 posts been moved to the Premier Pro Forum?

What happened to the Premiere Pro CS3...

Yes

The root of the premiere forum explains it:

What happened to the Premiere Pro CS3...

Does the Yes answer mean that all of the old CS3 posts have been carried over?

The Mods in that forum (where I read a lot, post once in awhile) are still working on cleaning things up after the change is major headings

If you have a particular message that needs to be moved from one place to another, post the link in the lounge... with a title something like ''Mod - please move this post'' and, based on some other messages I've seen, your message will eventually be moved

Bump

Then, of course, there are those who can't read the new subject headings, and post a Premiere PRO question in the section for plain old Premiere

I don't know if those will be moved or not (the Mods DO have their own lives, after all)

I didnt bother moving this cause I think the question was answered fine here.?Its not really a product question, its a ''wheres'' the forum question as a result of the Pr team re-orging the premiere area a while back.

Steve,

There was much confusion as to where one should post, with the old designations. The decison was made to try to group the sub-fora into a managable order. Premiere (non-Pro) was created, and all versions of PrPro (1.0 through CS4) were placed into another sub-forum. Premiere Elements stayed separate, as it should.

Now, with the two Premiere fora, one should mention their version in the Title, i.e. ''[Pr 6.5] Export Issues.''

To me, it makes perfect sense, as soon as one gets used to the change. The Encore forum went from about 15 sub-fora to five +/-, and it works well.

Give it time,

Hunt

I do remember a ''few'' (2 or 3?) questions that were specific to porn production.

Please help: Trying to find the right...

You may have a real challenge here.?Trying to precisely fit content over complex background images is not exactly an optimal way to build web pages.?But anyway....

Start by changing your table width to 100%.?1680px is very wide even by today's standards.?Most of my site visitors use 1024 -1280 wide displays.?And most of those do not brows with the viewport maximized.?So 1680 is just too awkward for most users.

Liquid layouts or percentages have some major drawbacks as well.?Your layout may start dropping stuff down if it's re-sized too much, or it may grossly stretch apart on ultra wide displays.?Personally, I think the best layouts for beginners are fixed-width, somewhere between 900 - 1000px, centered.

I have taken a look at your suggestions, and i am going to push to design pages in dreamweaver to similar formats in the future.

I have heard there is a Javascript that can allow the entire page to resize in accordance to smaller browsers and/ or ask the end user to resize to full browser size to view information.

Is this true. if so please let me know. If not, in your opinion, do all the elements of the page have to be changed?

Thanks again, you have been most helpful.

    Please visit the site www.trbla.com

Sorry to say, but image maps are not an optimal way to build web pages and haven't been since the mid 1990's.?To illustrate my point,?run your web page URLs through this SEO Browser tool.

    http://www.seo-browser.com

You will see your site as the Search engines see your site.?Which is to say, NO CONTENT!.?Images or image maps are no substitute for actual HTML text.?I think your design is very nice for print but it doesn't work well on the web where pages need to be flexible and contain content for search engines, people, screen readers and translators to grab onto.

If you think a Javascript that resizes your page is going to solve this problem, you're mistaken.?It won't resize all your graphics and adjust the layout proportionately for you.?That comes from good web design and pre-planning in the design phase. Viewing maximized doesn't help people like myself who do not have a 1680 wide display.

Rebuild this site the correct way.?Find a suitable CSS layout to work with. I highly recommend using CSS Layout Magic or one of the Page Packs from Project Seven. They're rock solid, work in all browsers and you'll learn a great deal from examining their code.

Jump to Slide Screen Not Loading

I have been having one problem after another with Captivate 4. An earlier issue (broken Open Files Links) I cannote figure out...likely a Flash problem since by accident I found that the links work on another computer, but not on my work computer or personal PC. As soon as I think my problems are solved, another issue arises. I have an 89-slide instructional module with various ''Jump to Slide'' links within the module, in particular from a menu page (first slide of the file). All seems to go well until I select the last button on my menu page, which is a summary page (located on slide 89). When it tries to navigate there, I see my index (Table of Contents) icon come up, and the rest of the screen is white...it does nothing). I tried moving slides around, for example I moved the Mod Summary slide to the beginning vs. end, which seemed to work, but then it hosed up other screens. Can anyone help?

Jump to Slide Screen Not Loading

    Hi there

Is there by chance a question slide perched majestically between where you are and where you want to go? If there is, depending on your quiz settings, Captivate may be expecting the question to be answered before allowing you to navigate beyond it.

On your Flash linking issue, it's worth noting that there are many different versions of the Flash player in existence. You may find things link just dandy on one PC only to find they fail miserably on another. (If you are running content locally)

Jump to Slide Screen Not Loading

Thanks again for your quick reply. There are no quiz slides at all in the file that I'm having problems with. I have a menu screen on the first page with 5 buttons that link to content within the file, and several others that link to external files. The problem always seems to occur toward the end of the file (the later slides). It first occurred when I'd link to the summary page, so I simply moved the summary to a location at the beginning of the file vs. the end.

    Hi Kristi,

Can you try any of these.. This can solve the problem to some extent

    1. Place the summary slide in a new project and set the action as open project for the button which used to point to the summary slide. Dont forget to place all the published contents of the summary project into the original project published folder.

    or

    2. Place a blank slide of duration 0.1 second before the Summary slide and link the button to jump to this blank slide. In preview you might be able to see the summary slide contents.

Does this help please let me know.

    -Ashwin

    Thanks for your response Ashwin.

With regard to item 1, I cannot move the summary slide outside of this module because I have a TOC set up to view all items including the Lesson Summary.

With regard to item 1, I acutally tried to do the 0.1 screen prior to you recommending, and it still doesn't work. Tried again, to no avail?

Has anyone had problems similar to this were a screen just refused to load? Any other suggestions...I'm kind of running out of time.

Let me add a few more details to this problem of my screen not loading from a main menu with buttons that link to various sections of my lesson. When I run the training in my browser (again, all my files are HTML and SWF), my links for the first two lessons work like a charm. If I hit the third lesson (and sometimes the fourth), I get awhite blank screen, with only my TOC arrows in the top right corner, which still allow me to open the TOC window. I can navigate to almost any screen I choose from the TOC, then if I return back to my Lesson menu, and again select the third buttton, it works like a charm! Sheesh. Are there any file size restrictions with Flash Player? Based on this additional info, does anyone have any suggestions?  I have over 9 months of work into this, and suddenly things are starting to break, and they weren’t broke before.

    Hi Kristi,

Can you please check what is the pre-loader percentge set for your project? This can be found at -

Edit %26gt; Preferences %26gt; Project %26gt; Start and End.

Please set the preload percentage to 100% and try to publish and play your project.

Also can you tell us the following details of your project

    - Contents of the project (like capture, audio, quiz etc)

    - Captivate .cp file size

    - Published movie .swf file size

    Regards,

    Mukul

My preloader settings are already set at 100.

Here are the answers to you other questions:

Conent - mostly all standard course navigation buttons, 7 full motion recording flvs (pulled in externally), text, images, and various interactions such as mouseovers, hotspots, TOC, etc. (no audio, screen caps were done outstide of Cap, an my quizzes are in a separate swf file).

    Captivate .cp is 14,176 KB

    Pun;odjrf swf is 5,065 KB

Thanks for your speedy reply. I hope you (or someone can shed some light).

    KM

I just wanted to post an update to this series of posts. I believe, upon accident, that I have isolated my problem some of the latter “jump to slide” hyperlinks loading. The hyperlinks seem to malfunction from a main menu (Slide 1) when I select hyperlinks from slides that are in the last half of the slide sequence, and only when I select them first. In other words, I believe that the problem is related to the full swf not loading in its entirety, and then if the user selects either of the two hyperlinks to the latter slides prior to the full swf loading, then it freezes. This sequence of events is highly unlikely to happen from the user perspective, unless, of course, they return to the couse with specific intent to revisit either of the latter lessons (Lessons 3 or 4) first. Does anyone have any creative suggestions for a fix or workaround to this?
